Great blog--and the plugs for our magazines and books are wonderful too. Thank you.

Subscriptions are just one element of publishing. Ad dollars are the main culprit in magazine's slippery slope. Here's an idea that could change things. See an ad in a magazine that you think is appealing? Send an email to the ceo of that company saying so. Maybe if enough of us did this, companies would rethink where they spend their ad dollars, magazines and newspapers would get more pages, and they'd begin to swing toward profitable again.

I loved this post even before I saw the nice plug you gave to my books. It's been the hardest year I can remember in 20 years of freelancing, but I'm still grateful to be self-employed and doing what I love. Having friends like you in the business is icing on the cake!

Lovely post, Diana. I'm buying all of the great-nieces/nephew, great-grandchildren and grandchildren books for Christmas.

This Christmas will be slimmer for many people.

May you and your stay healthy, Diana.

Oh, I totally understand where you're coming from about your parents giving up the farm. I'm still upset everytime I drive past my great-grandparent's farm and see what has been done to it.

I, also, look longingly at my grandparents home, when I go by it because now two different families have lived in it. The first one, I know took care of it because I got to see what they did to it. However, all of the flower gardens were destroyed. Horrible.

This second group of people, I have no idea what they have done to it.

Looking forward to hearing more about Iowa.

Hi Diana!

John and I watched every episode! We had just returned from two weeks in Colorado, one week in Estes Park and RMNP (where we went on our honeymoon 41 years ago.) Over the years, we've taken our kids there many times to hike, and now they are taking their children. And John and I both went there as children on family vacations., too. Thanks for another wonderful piece of journalism from my favorite writer!

I would like to learn more about that too, Diana! Thanks for pointing that out.
I've read so much about the natural behavior and life of elephants that to me, it isn't about if circus animals are treated humanely at the circus (although I hope they all are), it's an issue of using animals, making them do things that are so unnatural, against their will, for our amusement.
I do hope all circuses eventually evolve to not using animals. I like the clowns and the trapeze artists anyway!

Kerri, That was certainly an issue I considered as I worked on this story. I was impressed to learn about the Asian Elephant Conservation Center in Florida that the Feld family has built. I hope to go there some day and see what it's all about.

Congrats on the cover storfor Profile Magazine, Diana. That's wonderful.
I think the matter of the way circus animals are handled is an issue with the circuses and I think the animals should be left out of the mix, allowing humans who choose to perform to show off their talents.
